During this stage of the analysis, we refined the coding structure, and compared and contrasted themes identified across the data set, revealing key themes and locating them within the data set.

Thirdly, we conducted in-depth micro-analysis within the theme of affective sanctioning—we considered all the identified instances of sanctioning as it occurred among the users of the forums in their exchanges. At this stage, the focus was on interaction, actions (entries), and reactions (entries posted in reply). We aimed at investigating what was going on between individuals who engage in sanctioning, and, in this way, revealing key aspects of the micro-interactional dynamics through which a new social reality emerges, and which will circumscribe the emotional experiences of those members of a community of interactants.
